Despite the icy roads, nearly 100 people turned out for The Unchained Tour‘s stop at the Desert Island Supply Co. last Thursday. Thanks to everyone on the tour and to everyone who came out to support it. Thanks too to The J. Clyde, Finer Grind Coffee Roasters, Crestwood Coffee Co., Matt Layne and all our volunteers.

Read-a-thon participants sign up to read for 5-minute slots. The event is open to readers of all ages, and costumes are welcome!

The reading begins at 9 am. Other events planned for the grand opening party include live music and storytelling, balloon mapping, a “second-breakfast menu” writing booth, pin-the-tail-on-Smaug and other crafts and games.

Food and drinks will be available all day, as well!

All grand opening festivities will take place at DISCO headquarters at 5500 First Avenue North, in Woodlawn.

Thank to everyone who came out last week for the 2012 Eat Drink Read Write festival edition of Food Stories, an ongoing storytelling event we have hosted over the past couple of years. It was our first event in the new DISCO space, it was incredible to see so many people, from all over the city, occupy and use the space.

Special thanks to all our storytellers; to the Birmingham Public Library, which puts on the EDRW festival; to Mafioza’s, which provided the food; to the J. Clyde, which provided beer and wine; to T. Scott and Holly Carlisle for photographing the event; and to Michael Seale, who emceed. Hope to see you at the next Food Stories and at DISCO’s grand opening on November 17.

We held our first of what will be regular balloon mapping workshops on Thursday afternoon at Railroad Park. A dozen students participated, as did a handful of Railroad Park visitors just curious about the giant red balloon in the sky. Hope to see you at our next workshop in May.
