September 23: The Author as Outcast: Mae West, Oscar Wilde, and the Social Politics of Reading, a panel with Dr. William Hutchings (UAB), Dr. Keya Kraft (Samford), and Dr. Jamie Naidoo (University of Alabama)

September 21-22: Banned Books Read-A-Thon, a 36-hour, nonstop, out-loud, live-streamed reading of more than a dozen classic banned books. At the Desert Island Supply Co., 5500 First Avenue North.

AUGUST 2013

August 21: Spell Check, an adult spelling bee to benefit kids. All proceeds go to DISCO. At Bottletree Cafe. $5 to attend, $10 to compete.

August 7: Banned Book Read-A-Thon launch party at Avondale Brewing Co. 5:30-7:30 p.m. Free.

August 4: “Biscuits & Jam” benefit concert for DISCO, hosted by Southern Living and Birmingham Mountain Radio. At Avondale Brewing Co. from 2 p.m.-until. Tickets $10 in advance, $15 at the door.

As part of the Birmingham Public Library’s worldwide celebration of the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” DISCO will host a reading of the letter.
