October Workshop Schedule

The Desert Island Supply Co. offers free workshops to Birmingham-area students, ages 6-18. While all workshops are free, space is limited and registration is required. Thursday, October 6: Nature Writing at Ruffner Mountain
4-5:30 p.m. • Ages 9-12 • Ruffner Mountain Nature Center, 1214 81st Street S.
Learn to see what’s all around you. Birmingham-Southern student Kate Lecroy will guide you on a short walk around Ruffner Mountain, where you’ll be on the lookout for flowers, bugs, creatures and other signs of life. Come channel your inner Thoreau!

Sunday, October 9: Break ‘n Bread at Railroad Park
1-5 p.m. • All ages • Railroad Park, 1st Avenue South and 17th Street
DISCO is proud to be a part Break ‘n Bread, Alabama’s premier food and wine event. This year’s Break ’n Bread will feature signature dish tastings from nearly 40 Birmingham Originals restaurants paired with a wide selection of wine and beer. Thursday, October 13: Boo Yah! The Art of the Scary Story
Thursday, Oct. 13 • 4:30-6 p.m. • Ages 12-15 • Woodrow Hall, 5504 1st Ave. N.
At this afternoon workshop, we’ll learn the craft of using words to scare the pants off of somebody. And we’ll do it with plenty of time left to revise your story before Halloween.

Thursday, October 20November 17: Presumed Insect: Whodunits with Bugs
Thursday, Oct. 20 • 4-5:30 p.m. • Ages 9-12 • Woodrow Hall, 5504 1st Ave. N.
We’ll look at the signs bugs leave behind: balls of spit on the side of a plant, holes in leaves, exoskeletons, special webs. We’ll use these signs to craft our own short mystery stories!

Saturday, October 22: Jamberries, Fizzy Lifting Drinks and Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans

Come indulge your imaginary sweet tooth at this magic foods workshop. Inspired by some favorite fictional foods from literature, we’ll create our own fantasy foods and write stories to go with them.

Thursday, October 27: The Great Ginger Ale Taste Test
Thursday, Oct. 27 • 4:30-6 p.m. • Grades 3-5 • Woodrow Hall, 5504 1st Ave. N.
Are you opinionated? Do you like to eat and drink things? Then you’ll love this workshop with Shaun Chavis, a cookbook editor at Oxmoor House Book. You’ll sip on a bunch of different ginger ales, take tasting notes, rate the different drinks, review your favorite and then compare notes with the rest of the people in the workshop.
