July 14: Volunteer Workshop for Woodlawn Community Storytelling Project

by Chip Brantley on July 9, 2010

As you may have heard, DISCO recently received a Kresge Arts in Birmingham grant from the Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham for a community storytelling project called “Woodlawn: It’s All Good.” We are really excited about this project and hope you’ll get involved.

Here’s a snapshot of the project: From July-October, we’ll be doing video interviews with at least 50 residents of Woodlawn, past and present. The stories we gather will be woven into a script for a series of spoken word performances to be held at Woodlawn High School in spring 2011, with WHS students as the principal actors.

Next Wednesday, July 14, we’re holding a mandatory volunteer workshop from 6-9 p.m. for people interested in the story-gathering phase of the project.

It will be held on the 3rd floor of Woodrow Hall in Woodlawn (5504 1st Avenue North). Ron Pate and Sally Patricia Smith, who are heading up the project for DISCO, will lead the workshop and and cover the following:

  • Introduction to the project
  • Basics of shooting video
  • Basics of recording audio
  • Basics of interviewing
  • Project workflow for finished stories
  • Calendar of community storytelling days
  • Project YouTube channel / Woodlawn shorts series

Please email woodlawn@desertislandsupplyco.com if you’re interested in being involved in the story-gathering phase of “Woodlawn: It’s All Good” and can make it next Wednesday. If enough people are interested but not able to make it, we’ll schedule another workshop for later this month.

You can follow the storytelling project on Twitter (@woodlawnstories) and give it the thumbs up on Facebook (Woodlawn: It’s All Good). Finally, if you know someone who would like to participate in the project on either end of the camera, have him or her email woodlawn@desertislandsupplyco.com.
