We Want to Hear Your Woodlawn Stories

by charlotte on August 10, 2010

Have you lived, worked, worshipped, and/or hung out in Woodlawn? If so, we want to hear your story.

We’re in the story-collecting phase of our “Woodlawn Stories” project, for which we are recording at least 50 stories from Woodlawn residents, past and present.

Selected stories will be woven into a script for a series of spoken word performances by Woodlawn-area students and residents. To coincide with the story gathering and spoken word performance, DISCO will run a series of storytelling and writing skills workshops for students and community members.

Our goals are simple: 1) to reveal and bring together into one thread the many stories of Woodlawn, 2) to create an ongoing infrastructure for public storytelling in the Woodlawn community; and 3) to provide area students with more opportunities to write.

Are you part of the Woodlawn community, past or present? If so, we’d like to hear from you. Email us at woodlawn@desertislandsupplyco.com, call us at (205) 201-0826 or drop by and see us at one of the following story-gathering days:

Thursday, August 12, 2:00-7:00 p.m.: Woodlawn branch of the Birmingham Public Library
5709 First Avenue North  (Map)

Friday, August 27, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.: Girls Inc.
At 52nd St. S. and 8th Ave. S. in Crestwood North (Map)

Sunday, September 12, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.: Crestwood Coffee

“Woodlawn Stories,” which is funded primarily with a grant from the Kresge Arts in Birmingham program administered by the Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham, is proud to be part of Main Street Birmingham’s East End Arts initiative. For more information about “Woodlawn Stories,” visit http://www.desertislandsupplyco.com/woodlawn-stories.

What Is Your One Desert Island Book?

by charlotte on August 9, 2010

DISCO is participating in YP Birmingham’s Bidding for Birds silent auction later this month.

DISCO’s silent auction package will be a collection of desert island reads.

That’s where you come in: What is the book that you would have to have with you if you were stranded on a desert island?

We’d love for you to donate a copy of that book — new or gently used — and inscribe it with a few sentences about why it is your must-have book. (Authors, if you’d like to include an autographed copy of your own book instead of or in addition to your desert island read, that’ll work.)

We’ll present this collection as our Desert Island Library and package it in a large (but appropriately worn) treasure chest.

Contributions are due by Thursday, August 12. If you are interested in participating,  email us at help@desertislandsupplyco.com for details about where you can drop off your book. Thank you!
